“Don’t fly to Mars”: Bill Gates called Elon Musk’s ambitions a waste of money

Bill Gates has dealt several blows to fellow billionaire Elon Musk in a new interview, saying he doesn’t consider the Tesla CEO a “great philanthropist” at the moment, while dismissing the SpaceX founder’s efforts to fly to Mars as a waste of money.

The BBC asked the Microsoft co-founder at a recent meeting if he believes Musk will ever join the club of mega-rich donors such as Gates, Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos by promising to give away the bulk of his fortune.

“Yes, I think he will be a great philanthropist someday,” Gates said of Musk, admitting, “Obviously you know that things like Tesla have a positive impact — even without being a form of philanthropy.”

“But in the end, I don’t think he will – other than a few trips to Mars … I don’t think he’ll spend it on himself,” Gates continued. “So yes, I think he will join the ranks of philanthropists someday using his ingenuity.”

Gates told BBC interviewer Amol Rajan that he did not see Musk’s mission to colonize the Red Planet as a good use of funds, saying that providing vaccines to people in need should be a higher priority.

“It’s actually quite expensive to go to Mars,” Gates said. “You can buy a measles vaccine and save a life for $1,000 for every life saved, and that sort of gives you reasons, like not to go to Mars.”

Musk and Gates have been at odds in the past.

Musk confirmed last year that he turned down an offer from Gates to collaborate on philanthropic climate change efforts, after leaked texts between the two showed Musk telling Gates he can’t take him “seriously when you have a huge short position against Tesla.” , a company that is doing everything possible to solve the problem of climate change.”

A short position is a bet against a stock.

Musk then trolls Gates with a vulgar tweet comparing a photo of the Microsoft co-founder to a pregnant man emoji. Musk later said he “went from ridiculing Gates for downsizing Tesla to stating that he supports climate change action.”

But Gates has since also praised Musk and has publicly said that the Tesla CEO should not be underestimated following his $44 billion Twitter takeover.

“Don’t underestimate Elon. What he did at Tesla is amazing, helped with climate change, what he did at SpaceX,” Gates said on The Today Show in May 2022. “Will he make that improvement this time? … Elon thinks he can improve Twitter. Well, I don’t know specifically what it will do, but there is an opportunity and we need innovation in this area.”
