Dog attacked and injured 5-year-old boy while returning home from school in Far North Dallas, owner arrested

Dallas, TX – Instead of celebrating his birthday on Thursday, the 5-year-old Kavaughn was still hospitalized with injuries he sustained after a dog attacked him while he was going home from school.

Shortly after the incident, the owner of the dog was arrested, while Dallas Animal Services says the dog has been euthanized.

But according to the people living in the apartment complex where the incident took place, this incident was not an isolated one since they have been urging dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash for sometime now.

The mother of the boy shared more information about the Far North Dallas incident on social media in an effort to raise awareness. She said her son was attacked while he was going home from school with his cousins. Kavaughn suffered injuries to his face and throat and had to be checked into the intensive care unit.

According to a neighbor, Jordan Ware, who is also a dog owner living in the same apartment complex, it was sad to hear that the boy was attacked on his birthday hoping “the family is ok and the kid gets better as soon as possible.”

In an interview with a local TV station, Jordan showed an email from apartment management urging dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash. Few months ago, Jordan himself experienced similar situation when a dog ran up to him while he was out with his dog.

“Came up to me and my dog. And my dog was able to keep her away until the owner came down running from the house,” he said.

As of writing of this article, the boy seems to be in stable condition after he underwent a surgery in hospital. He is expected to recover although no more details about the extent of the injures were provided.

The 31-year-old Deneka Black, the owner of the dog that attacked the 5-year-old boy, was arrested and charged with attack by dangerous dog resulting in serious bodily injury, which is a felony. Dallas police didn’t provide more details about her arrest.

There’s no update on when Kavaughn will be released from the hospital. More than $1,200 have been raised to help with his medical costs.
