Death of former U.S. Virgin Islands star swimmer under investigation by police

Authorities are investigating the death of a former star swimmer in the US Virgin Islands.

Jamie Cale, 42, originally from New Hampshire, was found dead by her boyfriend just after midnight on Feb. 21, according to the US Virgin Islands Police Department.

Police say the boyfriend found Cale on the floor of their home after returning from a local bar, and that he and a friend took her to the Myra Keating Smith Community Health Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Once CPR was performed at the clinic and 911 was notified, but the woman died of her illness,” the police said.

The police did not provide further information about the nature of Cale’s “affliction”. Authorities have also not publicly identified Cale’s boyfriend.

The police department did not immediately respond to questions from NBC News.

The department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating Cale’s death, according to a police statement.

As a teenager, Kayle won a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay when she swam for Team USA at the 1997 Pan-Pacific Championships, according to swimming news site SwimSwam.

According to SwimSwam, she won the California State High School Championships in the 200m individual medley and 500m freestyle, and eventually swam in college at the University of Southern California.

She also took swimming classes at the University of Maine from 2000 to 2001, according to the school’s alumni association.

NBC News was unable to reach members of Cale’s family immediately on Monday morning.
