Dallas officer injured when responding to apartment burglary call Monday early morning, investigation

Dallas, TX – Dallas police officer was dispatched at a Lake Highlands apartment in regards to a burglary call in the early morning hours Monday, police say.

When he arrived at the scene, the gunman was still at the scene and shot the responding officer in the hand, leaving him injured.

According to the incident report, the shooting took place around 1 a.m. at the Residents at Lake Highlands apartments and the burglary was still in progress when the first responders arrived there.

Two officers responded and one of them confronted a man who was banging and kicking on the door of a unit. Police say the man then pulled a gun and opened fire at the officer.

“It happened and unfolded very, very quickly. We do know the suspect, when he shot at least four times at the officer, he struck him once, actually, in the officer’s gun hand,” Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia.

“It’s a serious injury to his hand officer, obviously. The officer is in stable condition. But they’re going to be doing some more tests on his hand, they may have to do some surgery on his hand later on. I know that there’s some bone hit, but he’s just a very brave individual.”

Right after the shooting, the shooter fled the scene, but the responding officers immediately put out a description of him and the man was arrested shortly after with help from Mesquite police.

The injured officer was transferred to hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries and his condition was stable. Chief Garcia, who visited him after the incident, said he was in good spirit taken into consideration everything that happened before.
