DA: Murders in Gouverneur and Rossi related; Suspected governor released

March 4 – GOVERNOR. St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary M. Pasqua said the two recent murders were linked.

“The investigation found evidence that there is a link between the two cases,” Mr. Pasqua said.

Police are investigating the death of Ronald E. Durham, 72, who was killed Feb. 11 at a cemetery in Gouverneur. On Thursday, they were alerted to a remote trailer in the city of Rossi, where they found the body of 67-year-old William M. Freeman.

Frederick A. Wing Jr., 22, the governor detained by police in connection with Mr. Durham’s death, has been released from the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in Canton, Mr. Pasqua said.

“At present, we have a person of interest to us,” Mr. Pasqua said.

Mr. Pasqua did not say whether the person concerned was involved in both murders, but said there was “absolutely” no threat to society at large.

Members of Mr. Wing’s family questioned his arrest for the murder of Mr. Durham, saying the two men were friends who did each other favors.

A large number of police authorities were called Thursday to 258 County Route 10, where Mr. Freeman’s body was found.

In addition to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, the National Security Investigation Service, the Watertown Police Department, and the North Country Crime Analysis Center were at the scene. .

According to a report from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, medical examiner Dr. Michael Sikirica was scheduled to perform an autopsy on Friday to determine the cause of death.
