Community Leader Calls for More Tools and Resources After Deadly Jamaica Plain Stabbing

The area on Jamaica Plain turned into a crime scene Saturday night as Boston police responded to reports of stab wounds at 5 Woodside Avenue.

“I’ve been here for 5 years and this is the first time I’ve seen something like this in the area, it’s usually quite quiet here. I was a little shocked when I heard all this,” says John, a resident of Jamaica Plain.

A nearby police station also became part of the crime scene when two stabbed victims appeared there. A 21-year-old woman died. Another victim, a 17-year-old girl, was badly injured.

“My heart goes out to the family, it’s a great loss, especially with such young children,” says John.

Immediately after the incident, the police detained a 16-year-old girl. She has been charged with murder.

“Every time someone this young does something at 16, it’s a really sad day for the whole community. I just wish we had more resources in the community to help people process their emotions more constructively,” says Joseph, a Jamaican Plain resident.

Community activist Rev. Kevin Peterson has witnessed his share of violence in Boston, including the loss of a relative who was killed on New Year’s Day. He continues to encourage people to use non-violent methods to resolve conflicts.

“We definitely need more resources in our schools, in our churches and communities in our community centers. We need tools. We need people to help our youth prepare to deal with violence in the streets and violence among themselves,” says Rev. Kevin Peterson of the Coalition for a New Democracy.

The 16-year-old suspect will stand trial in West Roxbury on Monday on murder charges. Under Massachusetts law, juveniles between the ages of 14 and 17 who are accused of murder are charged in regular hearings, not juvenile hearings.
