Clouded leopard missing: Dallas Zoo faces ‘serious situation’

A search was underway at the Dallas Zoo on Friday morning for a clouded leopard that had escaped its habitat, officials said.

Zoo said that it is under the “blue code”, which means that the non-dangerous animal is outside its habitat.

A clouded leopard named Nova arrived at the zoo in 2021 along with her sister Luna, according to NBC Dallas Fort-Worth. Nova likely escaped through a gap in her mesh fence she shares with Luna.

Officials believe she is probably still at the zoo.

“Given the nature of these animals, we believe that the animal is still in the territory and hiding. We will share updates and additional information as soon as we can,” the zoo said. “Right now we’re focused on finding the animal.”

Judging by the map of the zoo, the clouded leopard lives near the place where primates are kept.

Harrison Edell, vice president of animal care at the Dallas Zoo, said clouded leopards weigh about 30 pounds and pose no danger to humans, according to NBC Dallas Fort-Worth. Edell said she was most likely in the tree, hunting squirrels and birds.
