Cleveland selects Flowbird and Parkmobile to supply new citywide smart parking system

Approximately 600 multi-room meters and 100 single-space meters will be installed in the city center and in areas on both the east and west sides of the city.

CLEVELAND — Tired of rummaging through your pockets or car consoles for coins to top up parking meters in the city of Cleveland? These days seem to be coming to an end soon.

On Wednesday, the city announced it had selected Flowbird and Parkmobile to upgrade its on-street parking system. In particular, Flowbird smart parking meters will replace coin-operated meters, and Parkmobile’s mobile parking payment service will allow customers to pay for parking using an app, text message or scanning a QR code.

City officials say the new parking system “will be a single network of smart meters and credit card-capable kiosks with single and multiple parking spaces.”

In total, about 600 multi-zone meters and 100 single meters will be installed in the city center and in areas on both the eastern and western sides of the city.

“This project will provide more convenient and affordable parking options for everyone who spends time in Cleveland’s commercial and cultural centers,” Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb said in a statement. “Smart parking is an important step towards my administration’s vision to modernize operations across the city.”

The total estimated cost of the project will be just over $5 million, including the cost of hardware, software, and monitoring tools.

The next step for the Bibb administration will be to submit legislation to the Cleveland City Council to approve contracts with the two suppliers. Once approved, the contracts will also require administrative approval by the Consultants Review Committee and the Control Board.

The city estimates that once the agreements are signed, the new software and hardware will be ready for public use within six months. The total estimated cost of the project will be just over $5 million, including the cost of hardware, software, and monitoring tools.
