Cleveland reports first flu death in a 19-month-old baby

CLEVELAND. According to a press release from the Cleveland Department of Public Health, the city of Cleveland has seen its first flu death of children this season.

The report says that the 19-month-old child was hospitalized at the time of death.

“News of any death in our community is devastating; however, we understand the pain of losing a child,” said CDPH Assistant Director Brian Kimball. “We encourage all six months and older to get a flu shot if you haven’t already this season.”

Cuyahoga County reported its first childhood flu death of the season in a 13-year-old boy back in November.

As of December 24, there were 166 flu-related hospitalizations in Northeast Ohio. Influenza-related hospitalizations statewide are down 36% from the previous week, according to the Ohio Department of Health Dashboard.

To avoid the spread of influenza and RSV, CDPH recommends the following steps to stay healthy:

• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth after touching objects, as germs spread.
• Establish good habits, such as sanitizing surfaces, getting enough sleep, and managing stress.
