Cincinnati architect and fiancee go missing in Mexico, family fears kidnapping

HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) – A Hamilton man has gone missing in Mexico and his family is desperate for his return.

José Gutierrez holds a master’s degree from the University of Miami and works as an architect for a Cincinnati firm.

He was last seen domestically at CVG airport, from where he flew on Dec. 22 to Zacatecas, one of Mexico’s 31 states.

Zacatecas is located in the north-central part of the country halfway between Monterrey and Mexico City.

José was on his way to visit his fiancée, which his family says he often does. The couple has a wedding date set for 2023.

“He rides about three times a year,” José’s sister Brandi Gutierrez said Wednesday night.

Brandi says the last time she heard from José and his fiancée was when they went out to eat a few days after the trip. She doesn’t know what happened, but says the news outlets broadcast disturbing reports of the incident that night.

“The bars have really noticed the screams,” she said. “Something is wrong here”.

Since then, no one has seen or heard from the couple. His family believes that both he and his fiancée may have been kidnapped.

The Mexican government agency tasked with searching for missing persons confirms that it is looking for José.

His family says they have turned to the FBI and US government officials for more help. They also say they filed a complaint with the Hamilton police.

FOX19 contacted the FBI and Hamilton police. At the time of this writing, neither side has responded.

The US State Department has travel advisories for Mexico, including Zacatecas.

Local advisory language reads: “Do not travel for crime and kidnapping. Violent crime, extortion and gang activity are widespread in the state of Zacatecas. US citizens and [lawful permanent residents] were victims of kidnapping.

Brandi describes José as a kind and outgoing person.

“He loves social media. He loves to dance. He’s a good guy, she said.
