Chris Evert Announces She’s ‘Cured of Cancer’ More Than a Year After Diagnosis

Tennis legend Chris Evert says she’s “cured of cancer” after being diagnosed over a year ago.

68-year-old Evert spoke about the state of health in article published on ESPN and reflected on her journey to fight the disease since she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2021.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner wrote that she had learned that she had the same BRCA gene mutation as her late sister Jeanne, which put her at increased risk of ovarian and breast cancer. She said doctors performed a hysterectomy as a preventive measure, but they found cancer in her fallopian tubes.

But because of the “genetic roadmap” left behind by her sister, who died in 2020 of ovarian cancer, an ESPN tennis analyst said doctors were able to detect her cancer “early enough to do something about it.”

“My doctor said that if I hadn’t been found, four months later I would probably have stage three like Jeanne, with very few options,” she wrote. “Instead, I was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer and immediately started six rounds of chemotherapy. Today I am cancer free and there is a 90% chance that ovarian cancer will never return.”

Even after the positive news, she still had to decide whether she would monitor her health with annual mammograms, MRIs and ultrasounds or have a double mastectomy. After consulting with doctors, she settled on the latter.

“I held my breath, waiting for the results of my pathology. Thankfully the report came back clean and clear and my risk of developing breast cancer was reduced by over 90%,” she wrote.

At the end of her article, Evert advised people not to ignore their bodies.

“Trust your gut, know your family history, learn about genetic testing, and be your own advocate,” she said.
