Chris Christie Says House GOP Ridicule of Biden on State of the Union Was ‘Big Mistake’

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said on Sunday that the House Republican Party’s taunting of President Biden during a speech last week was the party’s “big mistake.”

“Big mistake. Look, you know, you don’t want to – you don’t want to get caught and they did it, some of them did it and it was a big mistake,” Christie told host George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Is the Week .”

Republican lawmakers booed and interrupted the president at some points during Biden’s sweeping speech in a joint session of Congress, sparking an outburst of dissent as Biden said some in the Republican Party want to shut down Medicare and Social Security.

“Look, the best answer would be to laugh at that. If you really wanted to reply to the president saying something as ridiculous as the Republicans [want to sunset the programs]“Because of what one Republican, Rick Scott, said, which was immediately rejected by almost the rest of the party, they should have just laughed at the president and moved on,” Christie said.

“Screams and screams, listen, I think it’s always bad. It won’t lead anywhere. And it gave Joe Biden the opportunity to bring them back spontaneously, which I think was probably the best part of his entire speech,” the former governor added.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) shook his head dismissively as he sat behind Biden, next to Vice President Harris. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Georgia) stood up to yell “liar” at the president when he cited the Republican Social Security cuts.

Biden played up the audience’s audible dissent in impromptu mid-speech lines.

“So guys, as we all seem to agree, Social Security and Medicare are off the books now, right?” Biden said. “Okay,” he added with a thumbs up.
