ChatGPT failed miserably in the 6th grade tests in Singapore, scoring an average of 16% in math and 21% in science. A few days later, he learned from his mistakes.

  • ChatGPT by OpenAI has failed math and science tests taken by sixth graders in Singapore.
  • According to The Straits Times, he made mistakes with simple addition and could not understand any of the diagrams.
  • But ChatGPT seems to have learned from its mistakes. He had a few questions when Insider tested him.

When the AI-powered viral bot ChatGPT was asked to solve questions from Singapore’s sixth grade exams, it failed miserably.

During an experiment in February, the Singapore-based news outlet The Straits Times asked ChatGPT to answer an elementary school final exam. The PSLE is an exam that all 12-year-old Singaporeans must pass and determines which high school they go to.

ChatGPT asked questions from 2020, 2021 and 2022 PSLE articles in math, science and English.

According to The Straits Times, he averaged 16 out of 100 on three math exams. During the test, he could not understand or answer any of the questions related to charts or graphs, and received zero points for these questions.

But ChatGPT also made mistakes with simple text questions. When asked about the sum of 60,000, 5,000, 400 and 3, the answer was 65,503, according to The Straits Times.

Correct answer: 65403.

However, when an Insider asked the same question, ChatGPT’s answer turned out to be correct.

ChatGPT did slightly better on scientific papers, scoring an average of 21 out of 100.

But on Monday, when Insider tested ChatGPT on two PSLE science questions — one from 2020 and the other from 2022 — it answered both questions correctly.

According to The Straits Times, ChatGPT managed to pass English language tests and score an average of 11 out of 20 on three of the exams. During the English test, ChatGPT still ran into problems – this time with questions containing words that have multiple meanings.

One example cited by The Straits Times was the word “value”. ChatGPT ignored the context of the question, where “value” refers to someone’s moral principles, and answered as if it meant monetary value.

ChatGPT was developed by artificial intelligence company OpenAI and launched in November. By the end of January, it had 100 million users.

The bot’s failure to pass the Singapore sixth grade exams is surprising – it managed to pass the final exam at Wharton Business School, pass the tests in four years of law school, and easily pass the exam for obtaining a medical license in the United States.

Universities are now reviewing exams over concerns that AI-powered bots could be used for fraud, The New York Times reported in January. This turn in testing includes more oral exams, group work and handwritten assessments instead of printed materials, according to The Times.

Representatives from OpenAI and the Singapore Ministry of Education did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
