Canadian man charged with murder in car crash that killed 16-year-old girl

A Canadian man who told police he was on a skiing business trip has been charged with vehicular homicide and drunk driving after police said he hit a 16-year-old girl with his car on Sunday and fled the scene.

State police were called to East Crawford Avenue near Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville, Fayette County around 7:30 p.m. Sunday to report a woman lying in the road. When they arrived, the medics performed artificial respiration on the teenager. She was taken to a district hospital, where she later died.

Detectives checked CCTV and saw a dark-colored pickup truck drive into the oncoming lane, then onto the side of the road, where it crashed into a victim, then into a fence and a traffic sign, the complaint said. The vehicle was not left at the scene.

The car and driver, identified as Mark Lucic, 42, from Ontario, Canada, were soon found at a gas station in the town of Dunbar.

Lucic told officers he was stopping in town for a corporate ski trip, and the GPS took him through several small towns. He said he remembers having a flat tire and stopping by a gas station to wait until morning to get his tire fixed, according to the complaint.

He is charged with murder in a vehicle while drunk driving, murder in a vehicle, aggravated assault in a vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault in a vehicle, accidents resulting in death or bodily injury, drunk driving, reckless driving, reckless driving and other driving violations.

Lucic was placed in the Fayette County Jail and denied bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 15.
