California covered in snow as parts of US face threat of ‘intense’ tornadoes

California continues to suffer from severe weather, with parts of the state covered in snow Thursday as the Southern Plains and other areas faced the threat of “long-lived and intense” tornadoes, according to forecasters.

Heavy snowfall in the Golden State forced the closure of Joshua Tree National Park, with officials citing “inclement weather” in a tweet on Wednesday. “Rangers are working on reopening ASAP!” They said.

Due to severe weather, California’s Yosemite National Park was already closed last week until Wednesday. However, on Wednesday the park said it will remain closed due to fresh snowfall, stating “there is no estimated opening date”.

Power outages also continue to affect parts of the state, with more than 80,600 utility customers without power as of early Thursday morning, according to online tracker PowerOutage.us.

Meanwhile, in parts of the Southern Plains and areas of Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, a “severe weather outbreak” was expected.
