Boeing to cut 2,000 corporate support jobs to focus on development and manufacturing

Feb. 7 (UPI) — Aircraft manufacturer Boeing said it will cut about 2,000 corporate jobs in 2023, adding more engineers and manufacturing workers.

“We expect around 2,000 layoffs this year, primarily in finance and HR, through reduced layoffs,” the company said in a statement. Monday said.

“We have communicated and will continue to communicate transparently to our teams that we anticipate layoffs in certain corporate support functions so that we can focus our resources on design and manufacturing,” Boeing said. says in the statement.

Boeing announced plans last month add 10,000 new jobs as production ramped up, but hinted at layoffs as well, saying the company would “cut staff in some support functions.”

Boeing civilian aircraft sales have plummeted following the crash of Lion Air Flight 610 in 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in 2019.

Both crashes were determined to have been caused by a software glitch in the new Boeing 737 Max that caused the aircraft to automatically enter a steep dive.

Civil airliner order cancellations have outpaced new sales in 2020 as the 737 Max remained on the ground in much of the world. By the end of 2022, sales of civil airliners have grown.

Last year, Boeing agreed to pay $200 million to settle allegations that they misled investors about safety issues related to the 737 Max.

Boeing has come under fire Amnesty International for selling arms to Saudi Arabia during a deadly bombing campaign against rebel-controlled areas in Yemen that killed thousands of civilians.

Despite international condemnation of the Saudi regime, Boeing continues to tout its relationship with the Gulf dictatorship and announces that forecasts sales of $14.9 billion. to the Saudi defense sector over the next five years.
