Bills’ Hamlin has a long recovery from on-field collapse, rep says

Hamlin was released from a Buffalo hospital more than a week after he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated during a game.

ORCHARD PARK, NEW YORK. As outstanding as Damar Hamlin’s recovery has been, the Buffalo Bills safety still faces a lengthy rehab about three weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest and needing resuscitation on the field while playing in Cincinnati, his marketing rep told The Associated. Press on Thursday evening.

“Damar still needs oxygen and his heart is regularly monitored to make sure there are no mishaps or consequences,” Jordon Rooney said. “While he can visit the team facility, Damar is unable to travel frequently and needs extra rest to help his body recover.”

Rooney provided an update to highlight that Hamlin still faces hurdles after being discharged from Buffalo General Medical Center on Jan. 11. Hamlin was discharged five days after his doctors said the player was breathing on his own, walking, talking and showing no signs of neurological damage. .

Rooney’s update also shed light on comments made by Bills coach Sean McDermott, who said on Wednesday that Hamlin had begun visiting the team’s base regularly. McDermott, however, stressed that the 24-year-old was taking “a little step at a time”, adding that Hamlin “dips his toe back and gets on the path just to get back to himself.”

Hamlin has not made any public appearances yet, with the exception of a photo of linebacker Matt Milano posted to his teammate’s Instagram account at the Bills facility on Saturday. And he has yet to speak in public, short of posting on his social media accounts.

Rooney said that Hamlin is being watched by his parents and “remains very optimistic and grateful for the support he has received from his teammates and coaches, the Bills Mafia and people from all over the world.” This outpouring of support resulted in Hamlin’s Chasing M’s charitable foundation raising nearly $9 million in donations.

Not to mention where, he added, Hamlin would be rooting for the Bills on Sunday when Buffalo host Cincinnati in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

Hamlin tweeted live while watching Buffalo’s 35-23 season finale victory over New England from his hospital bed at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Jan. 8. Last weekend, he tweeted live while watching from home. victory over Miami in the playoffs with a wild-card.

The game against Cincinnati has an added value. It’s the first meeting between the two teams since their game was called off on January 2, with Hamlin knocked unconscious after being hit right in the chest in what appeared to be a typical tackle from Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

Hamlin’s family and Bill’s quarterback Josh Allen defended Higgins, saying he shouldn’t be blamed for what happened.

On Thursday, Higgins said he was very grateful for the family’s support, while expressing his hope that Hamlin would be able to attend the game so they could meet.

“Just be happy to see him,” Higgins said. “I didn’t really talk to him. Just let his family do what he needs with all his loved ones.”

Also Thursday, New York Gov. Katie Hochul expressed her support for Hamlin during a phone call with the player. In a message posted to her Twitter account, Hochul called Hamlin “an inspiration” and informed him that “the hopes and prayers of 20 million New Yorkers have been with him throughout his recovery.”

Hamlin of Pittsburgh responded that he was pleased to meet Hochul and was “delighted to see how our collaboration in the future will help and influence many.”
