Biden touts economic progress and targets House Republicans

January 26 (UPI) — U.S. President Joe Biden touted the nation’s economic progress during a speech Thursday in Springfield, Virginia.

“Just this morning, we got some very good news about the American economy,” Biden said. told an audience of members Union of steam fitters.

Biden was referring to a report released Thursday by the US Department of Commerce, which showed that the country’s gross domestic product increased by 2.9% during the fourth quarteron an annualized basis.

“I’m not sure the news could have been better – economic growth is higher than experts expected at 2.9%,” Biden said.

“I don’t think it’s unfair to say that all of this is evidence that Biden’s economic plan is really working.”

The president also took aim at his Republican detractors by defending economic progress, a week after the federal government hit the $31.4 trillion public debt ceiling.

“We are moving in the right direction. Now we have to protect these achievements.” We must protect the gains that have been made through our policies. Protect them from MAGA Republicans in the House of Representatives who threaten to destroy this progress,” Biden said Thursday.

House Republicans are seeking spending cuts in exchange for supporting an increase in the debt limit.

“This is not your father’s Republican Party. It’s a different breed of cat, they say,” Biden said, referring to the party contingent of hardline conservatives.

“In fact, they are threatening to default on US debt, a debt that has been accumulating for over 230 years. We never, never did that.”

He also touted the Republican plan to cut the IRS and impose a national sales tax as “chaos”.

“I love this one. They want a 30 percent national sales tax on everything from food, clothes, school supplies, housing, cars, everything, 30 percent.”
