Biden Delivers Historic Sermon at Ebenezer Church in Georgia

January 15 (UPI) — President Joe Biden said America should heed the words of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to “redeem America’s soul” in a sermon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on Sunday.

Sunday would have been King’s 94th birthday. The church is a living tribute to the civil rights icon, and this year its always monumental celebration of the king has become historic.

Presidents like Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have graced the pulpit in the past. Biden became the first sitting president on Sunday. deliver Sunday sermon within these walls.

Biden said it was intimidating to follow the choir despite speaking to leaders around the world. He remembered King as one of his two political heroes, along with Robert F. Kennedy, and said that the United States should consider King’s moral vision and follow his path.

“The thing is, this is a time of choice,” he said. “Are we a people who will choose democracy or autocracy? You couldn’t have asked this question 15 years ago; we thought democracy was made for our African Americans. This is not true”.

“We should choose community over chaos,” he continued. “Are we humans going to choose love over hate? These are the vital questions of our time. I believe that Dr. King’s life and legacy is leading the way for us, and we should look to it.”

Senator Raphael Warnock, D-G, led the service and introduced Biden. Several other elected and non-elected officials were in attendance, including Senator John Ossoff, former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, current Mayor Andrew Dickens, and former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is now in the Biden administration.

“I am inspired by his lifelong commitment to service,” Warnock said of Biden.

Warnock touted Biden’s accomplishments as a senator and later as president.

“And Georgia has something to do with it,” he said.

Ebenezer is visited by about 6,000 people for King’s annual celebration, which coincides with his birthday the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is observed federally on Monday.
