Axios reporter fired after accusing DeSantis press office of spreading ‘propaganda’

An Axios reporter was fired this week after calling a government press release that featured Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis “propaganda.”

Journalist Ben Montgomery was fired from a news agency because of a state Department of Education employee. posted a screenshot about how he told the department’s press office via email, “This is propaganda, not a press release,” in response to a post saying the GOP governor was hosting a roundtable on “Exposing Diversity and Inclusion Fraud.” in higher education.”

Axios Editor-in-Chief Sarah Kehaulani confirmed by Fox News that Montgomery “is no longer with Axios” but did not reveal why.

“Out of respect for our employees, we do not discuss the terms of dismissal,” she said.

Montgomery said the Washington Post On Monday evening, he received a call from Jamie Stockwell, executive editor of Axios Local, and his boss asked if he had sent the email.

He then told a reporter that his “reputation in the Tampa Bay area” was “irreparably tarnished,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery of Tampa ridiculed the situation without denying it when a Vanity Fair reporter Charlotte Klein tweeted on Tuesday he was fired by email.

“Some personal news: I made pancakes this morning for the first time in years” he tweeted back to Klein’s news tweet. “Strawberry compote and whipped cream. They were delicious.”

Montgomery told Fox News that the press release issued by DeSantis’ office “wasted my time” and insisted that his response was not due to partisan politics, but because the release lacked context.

He also told the publication that he did not regret sending the email because his teenage daughters told him they were proud of him.

“That’s really all that matters,” he said.

He relented, although he wished he had better explained his problem in a press release.

“I regret being so short,” he reportedly said. “In Axios style, I used clever brevity and it cost me.”

Axios bills itself as “A Clever Brevity Worthy of Human Time, Attention and Trust”.

According to Fox News, part of Axios’ editorial ethics policy requires all employees to “maintain professionalism with all sources” and “respect and treat all people with courtesy with whom we come into contact.”
