Authorities are seeking the arrest of a man who allegedly mined cryptocurrencies at a high school and stole $18,000 worth of electricity.

  • In December 2021, the city discovered a secret cryptocurrency mining operation under a high school in Massachusetts.
  • The police are trying to arrest Nadeem Nahas, a former assistant director of city services.
  • Nahas did not appear in court for arraignment on Thursday.

According to reports from local news outlets, authorities want to arrest a former city employee in Massachusetts who ran a covert cryptocurrency mining operation under a high school two years ago.

Nadeem Nahas, a former deputy director of facilities for the city of Cohasset, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on charges of vandalizing a school and stealing $18,000 worth of electricity. But he did not appear in court, and the judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

In December 2021, the City discovered 11 computers, electrical wiring and air ducts in the basement of Cohasset High School.

Local authorities launched an investigation, and the equipment was also inspected by the US Coast Guard Investigation Service and the Department of Homeland Security, NBC reported.

After a three-month investigation, Nahas was identified as a suspect and a criminal case was opened. He stepped down from his position in March 2022.

According to court documents, authorities concluded that the cryptocurrency mining operation was “illegally connected to the school’s power grid” and the alleged Nahas stole $17,492.57 worth of electricity from the school by turning on computers non-stop from April to December 2021.

It has become more difficult to mine cryptocurrencies as more miners on the blockchain intensify competition. According to data from CoinWarz, Bitcoin mining difficulty hit an all-time high of 39 trillion hashes in February, indicating that more computing power and electricity are needed to mine the token.
