Ask Amy: How to Get Money Back for Incorrect Tax Charges on Your Electricity Bill

There are so many taxes, fees, and other charges on your electricity bill that most people look at the total and pay for it. But you may be paying a fee that you don’t really owe, and if you’ve been paying it for months or years, you’re entitled to a refund.

What to check on your electricity bill

Go check your electricity bills. Look for the “miscellaneous gross receipts” tax, or simply “GRT” for short.

You should only if you live within the city limits of any city. If you live in an unincorporated part of the county, you do not need to pay this tax.

Spectator Dina, who lives in Brazoria County, emailed why she called Green Mountain Energy to ask for a refund and said they let her race for over a month. This is quite typical for electric grid companies. Your customer service reps probably won’t know what you’re talking about, but you need to be persistent.

How to get a refund for the wrong electricity tariff

If your electricity supplier is not cooperating, you can contact the Consumer Protection Department of the Public Utilities Commission. This is what Dina did. The PUC helped escalate her problem to someone upstream at Green Mountain Energy, and Dina said the company credited her account.

The tax on miscellaneous gross receipts is only about 2% of the electricity bill. But you can add. In Dina’s case, her credit was approximately $350.
