Applications for the Poindexter Award are open until January 13, 2023.

The Columbus City Council is accepting nominations for the 2023 Poindexter Awards in the Arts, Business, Education, Faith, and Public Service through January 13, 2023. The awards recognize the accomplishments and accomplishments of individuals in the community who have made significant contributions to Columbus, especially in the black community.

“The Poindexter Awards are an opportunity to recognize the people who helped create the city we live in today and honor those who work to improve our neighborhoods,” Council President Shannon G. Hardin said in a press release.

The Poindexter Awards are named for James Preston Poindexter, a former clergyman, abolitionist, civil rights activist and political pioneer who was elected as the first black Columbus city councilman in 1880, the report said.
