Animal cruelty among indictments

January 19. An animal neglect complaint and subsequent investigation led to the Cumberland County Grand Jury indicting a local woman. This indictment was one of dozens issued by the commission.

On January 5, a grand jury indicted Nancy Irene Lewis on a single count of animal cruelty.

The indictment states that from October 13, 2021 to December 13, 2021, “illegally and willfully or knowingly unreasonably failed to provide adequate food, water, care or shelter to an animal in her care…”

Witnesses named in the indictment include two Tennessee Agricultural Crimes Unit investigators, two veterinarians, a sheriff’s investigator, and two deputies and three Horse Haven Rescue Officers.

Lewis and all individuals indicted by a grand jury are due to appear in criminal court for arraignment on January 20.

An accusation is just an accusation and is not proof of guilt. The grand jury simply ruled that there were sufficient grounds to refer the charges to further trial.
