Akron man found guilty of kidnapping son and shooting mother

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – A man accused of kidnapping his four-year-old son and shooting the boy’s mother pleaded guilty in Summit County General Court Tuesday afternoon.

Judge Susan Baker Ross followed Jose Castro to 15 years in prison.

According to Akron police, Castro shot and killed Elsie Rivera Ortiz in the 1100 block of Tulip Street around 6:50 pm on September 19, 2022.

Officers were called to the scene due to an injured woman, and according to police, Ortiz was unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds when officers arrived.

While EMS treated Otiz, police said officers spoke to witnesses who said Castro took the couple’s child and drove away after the shooting.

Police issued a statewide Amber Alert for the child, and later that evening the boy was turned into detectives unharmed.

Castro was found and captured early on September 20, 2022 at a gas station in Cleveland.

Ortiz was taken to the Cleveland Clinic of Akron General Hospital. Relatives reported that she was recovering from her injuries.
