Air India announces deal to buy more than 200 aircraft from Boeing

Feb. 14 (UPI) — Air India announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Boeing to purchase 290 aircraft worth $45.9 billion.

In what will be Boeing’s largest deal in South Asia, Air India will buy 190 737 MAXs, 20 787 Dreamliners and 10 777Xs. There is also the possibility of installing additional 50 737 MAX and 20 787-9.

“The acquisition of nearly 300 high-tech Boeing aircraft is a key element of Vihaan.AI, the comprehensive transformation and growth strategy we are pursuing at Air India,” said Air India CEO Campbell Wilson.

“These new aircraft will allow us to significantly expand our route network both domestically and internationally, and will come with brand new world-class avionics to enable passengers to travel with maximum comfort and safety.”

President Joe Biden praised the deal and said it reflected the strength of the US-India economic partnership.

“This purchase will support more than 1 million US jobs in 44 states, and many of them will not require a four-year college degree,” Biden said. in a statement.

Air India’s contract with Boeing will also include parts and landing gear replacement programs, training for pilots and technicians on aircraft maintenance and modifications.
