According to the sheriff of North Carolina, a sheriff’s deputy killed a man who was behind another deputy with a gun in his hand.

Rowan County Sheriff Travis Allen said Thursday that Deputy North Carolina Sheriff shot and killed a man who grabbed a gun while another deputy was on his back, trying to subdue him in the bedroom at home.

Jordan Mays died after a deputy fired five bullets from his AR-15 rifle “at close range” from Mays, Allen said in a statement from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. According to the sheriff, at least one bullet hit Mays in the head, killing him.

According to the sheriff’s statement, in response to a tip, five police officers went to a single-width trailer at 138 Thriftwood Court late Tuesday night to serve warrants for Mays and another suspect, Jeremy Brock. According to Allen, Mays was a wanted man issued by the North Carolina Probation and Parole Board.

According to the sheriff’s office, Mays had outstanding warrants to fail to appear in court on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, driving with a revoked license, and violating probation.

At the time of the call, five deputies arrived at the scene, all of them in the rank of deputy head. Among them were Jessica Abrams, David Scott, Travis James, Chase Safrit and Adam Diles. All five have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The deputies arrived

The deputies used speakers from the patrol car to announce their presence and call for Mays and Brock. They approached the trailer after several failed attempts. Some interrogated the woman behind the trailer. Others noticed movement in a detached garage and found Brock inside. He was arrested without incident, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputies entered the trailer because they believed Mays was inside and, according to the sheriff’s statement, repeatedly announced their presence.

Inside the bedroom

Entering the bedroom, they found Mace on the bed with a woman. The sheriff said the gun was on a table or table in the bedroom, and that deputies ordered Mays not to reach for the gun and show his hands.

The story goes on

Allen said the bodycam video shows Diles “getting hands on” with Mays, wrestling him on the bed and then on the floor. It is not clear how the fight began.

Another deputy tried to contact Mays, while a third deputy, Travis James, stood right outside the bedroom door, “covering the other two assistants with his AR-15 rifle as they tried to subdue” Mays, Allen said.

According to the sheriff, when the policeman called out to “call him,” Mays got up from the floor with Diles on his back and grabbed a gun from the table.

According to Allen, James said “gun” to his fellow deputies in the room several times and fired at Mays when the man turned around, gun in hand.

This is an evolving story. Stay tuned.
