A shooting in Baltimore killed four men and injured a child.

The Baltimore shooting that killed a man, wounded a toddler who was shot in the face, and injured two other adults Saturday night was a “mass casualty incident,” a senior city police chief said.

One man was detained for questioning and police were still trying to determine whether he would be recognized as a suspect or victim, authorities said at a press conference on Saturday evening.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison described the chaotic scene in the city’s Upton neighborhood, where ShotSpotter sensors alerted police to the shots at 6:39 p.m.

He said it looks like the shooter or possibly more than one armed suspect opened fire, killing a man standing outside, wounding another in the arm and wounding a motorist and two children in a nearby car, Harrison said.

“We are here again with another mass casualty incident,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the car carrying the three crashed into a pole and stopped. The woman behind the wheel was hospitalized in a critical condition,” the report said. Harrison said the 6-year-old was most likely seriously injured in the collision and did not appear to have been hit by a firearm.

According to statements from the commissioner and the police, a 2-year-old child who was in the car was shot in the face and was also taken to the hospital.

“We believe that at some point, a gunman or some gunmen opened fire,” Harrison said. “We don’t know if the intended target was the people in the car or the people who are on the sidewalk.”

There were no suspects in custody.

The reason for the shooting is still unknown. “We see it all the time and we know it doesn’t mean anything,” Mayor Brandon Scott said.

The police pleaded with potential friends, relatives and witnesses to come forward with facts about the attack.
