A man became “very ill” after ingesting rat poison found in a Taco Bell burrito, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was also involved in a heated altercation with Colorado Taco Bell workers, according to the sheriff’s office.

CENTENNIAL, Colorado. A man became very ill over the weekend after eating a Taco Bell burrito containing rat poison, and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how the poison ended up there.

Around 1:00 p.m. on January 15, the sheriff’s office responded to a Taco Bell report on Smoky Hill Road near Buckley Road in Centennial about the riot.

The deputies discovered that there was a heated exchange between the client and the employees due to the fact that the soda machine was not working. According to the sheriff’s office, the customer was eventually given an extra burrito and went home.

A few hours later, around 7:50 p.m., the sheriff’s office was called from the hospital and informed that they were caring for a patient who had eaten at Taco Bell and had ingested rat poison. According to the sheriff’s office, the hospital confirmed that the burrito did indeed contain rat poison.

Investigators determined that the affected person was the same person who had been involved in the earlier violation. Deputies responded to his home, hospital and Taco Bell to launch an investigation.

They learned from the victim that he went home, did housework and watched TV before eating groceries he had bought earlier from Taco Bell.

The man said he immediately became ill and called 911. The sheriff’s office said he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The food was confirmed to contain rat poison, the sheriff’s office said.

Surveillance video from both inside and outside the Taco Bell restaurant was collected as evidence.

The case is considered an “open and active” investigation, and the sheriff’s office is currently treating the situation as if the man had received food from a restaurant with rat poison. How exactly the poison got there is still unclear.

Arapaho County Health Services contacted. The health department said it had reviewed and allowed the restaurant to reopen.
