A former MindGeek moderator said that many of the Pornhub videos that were due to be removed remained on the platform for months.

A former MindGeek employee said that Pornhub had received “thousands” of requests to take down videos that could include sexual exploitation of minors or non-consensual activities, but moderators weren’t able to review them all.

“Many videos that should have been taken down remained on the air for months,” he said in a new Netflix documentary, Money Shot: The Pornhub Story, which airs on Wednesday.

The man, whose identity has not been released, claimed to view 700 videos a day, but moderators were expected to view even more.

“I think the company could have done more to prevent some things and chose not to, and only really changed some things after it had problems,” he said.

“We went through the videos as fast as we could. Even if we thought we were working hard, we would still skip a few videos from time to time.”

The ex-moderator said he couldn’t tell a person’s age from a video and that it was “very difficult” to tell if they were underage.

“Basically, we just assumed that my manager would then decide if the video would be permanently removed or if it would be posted again,” he said. “The rules kept changing.”

Iota Suras of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says in the documentary that online companies, defined as electronic service providers, are required by US law to report explicit child pornography to the center when they become aware of it on their platform.

“The reporting provision only applies to US companies, so international companies are not required to register with the NCMEC, report child sexual abuse material to our CyberTipline, or have anything to do with us at all,” Souras said.

Mindgeek registered for NCMEC reporting in March 2020. According to his website, he is headquartered in Luxembourg but operates primarily from Montreal, Canada.

Money Shot: The Pornhub Story explores the history and dark side of Pornhub, as well as sex worker censorship. The documentary features interviews with former MindGeek employees, porn actresses, journalists and industry workers. It’s available to stream on Netflix worldwide since March 15th.

In a statement, MindGeek told Insider, “It is MindGeek’s policy to immediately remove any content that violates our terms of service and review any material reported by users without question.”

It added: “No user may upload content to our platforms without uploading a third-party verified government-issued ID. Any user has the ability to disable some of the content on our platforms by completing a content takedown request form, and it is our policy to immediately and automatically disable material for further viewing. These policies are just a small part of MindGeek’s industry-leading security measures that have resulted in NCMEC, the world’s leading child protection organization reports that Pornhub has fewer incidents of child sexual abuse. material and remove child sexual abuse material as soon as possible upon notification on all major platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and others.

“Any suggestion that we don’t have enough moderators to scrutinize all uploaded content is blatantly false. The fight against illegal content on the Internet must be fought with effective policies, data and facts, and MindGeek is committed to staying at the forefront of this fight.”
