A British entrepreneur buys a burnt-out Tennessee mansion that went viral after it was listed on Zillow with a price tag of $1.5 million.

Mike Thakur and his wife, both from Manchester, UK, live in Houston with their three children and have been looking for a home in the Nashville area, he told Insider.

Thakur, who runs a flexible office space business in Houston, said his wife received an email about the mansion on the morning of Jan. 18 and he thought it “could be interesting” at the time. He said he wasn’t intimidated by the damage from the fire and decided to stop by while looking at real estate in Nashville.

“My wife and I have never been afraid of challenges,” he said. “We have moved from one country to another several times, so I think we are just prone to a little risk.”

The burnt out mansion in Franklin, Williamson County was built in 1997, according to the Zillow list. It was undergoing construction work in September 2022 when an explosion started a fire that spread to the roof, which partially collapsed and damaged several rooms, according to Nashville-based broadcaster WKRN.

The burnt property was later posted on Zillow with photos of the fire and damage and a price tag of $1.5 million, prompting ridicule online. Twitter and other social networks. The Zillow list received nearly 450,000 hits.

Paula Duvall, the home’s owner and sales agent, told WKRN she “wanted to be transparent about the history of the home and we wanted to show how grand the home was and how great it could be again if they decided to restore it.” .”

On Wednesday, she told The Tennessean that Thakur has a real estate contract, but the deal has yet to be finalized. Thakur refused to tell Insider how much he offered.

He said that he and his family were impressed by the “presence” of the house when they stopped outside. “He just sits on top of the hill, you pull up in the driveway and he just looks at you, obviously the sun was just perfect that day,” he said. “It really looked impressive, although it is obvious that it received serious damage.

“The kids were excited, my wife was excited, I was very excited. We’re just a couple of people with three kids and a dream, so we decided, “Hey, we’re going for it. This may be our only chance. ‘

“We love the idea that we can bring something back to life and restore something to its new glory – not necessarily its former glory – instead of just throwing things away.”

He said he intends to see what can be salvaged from property and reused, adding: “We live in a disposable society and I don’t think that’s always a good thing.”
