3 killed at Michigan State University; gunman is dead

EAST LANSING, Michigan (AP) — A gunman opened fire at Michigan State University Monday night, killing three people and injuring five more before shooting himself off campus during a hours-long manhunt that saw frightened students hide in the dark.

Police reported the man’s death early Tuesday morning, four hours after the shooting broke out, first in Burke Hall, an academic building, and then near the MSU Union, a popular place to eat or study.

“It’s really been a nightmare we’re living in tonight,” said Chris Roseman, the acting deputy chief of the campus police department.

Hundreds of police officers searched the East Lansing campus, about 90 miles (145 km) northwest of Detroit, looking for the suspect, who police described as a short black man wearing red shoes, a denim jacket and a baseball cap.

Rozman said it was too early to talk about motives and whether the man had any connection to the university. His name is not immediately revealed.

“There is a lot we don’t know at the moment,” Rozman said.

According to him, two people died in Berkei, and one more – in the Union of Moscow State University.

Sparrow Hospital spokesman John Foren said he had no information on the condition of the five wounded.

By 10:15 p.m., police reported that Burke, as well as nearby hostels, had been placed under guard.

Before the shooter was found dead, WDIV-TV meteorologist Kim Adams, whose daughter is a student at Michigan State, told viewers the students were tired of the hours-long saga.

“They hid, turned off the lights in a dark room,” Adams said. “Their cell phones are starting to run out of power. Not everyone has chargers with them, and losing contact with the outside world is horrendous on a typical day for college students, not to mention there’s someone out there they haven’t caught yet.”

Aedan Kelly, Jr., who lives half a mile (less than a kilometer) east of campus, said he locked the doors and closed the windows “just in case.” According to him, the sirens were constant, and a helicopter hovered overhead.

“It’s all very scary,” Kelly said. “And then all these people are texting me wondering if I’m okay, which is mind-boggling.”

Michigan State has about 50,000 students. All activities on campus have been canceled for 48 hours, including sports and exercise.
