2 being treated for likely exposure to fentanyl at an Oregon school

WILLAMINA, Oregon. (AP) — A student and a deputy were hospitalized Tuesday after they were likely exposed to fentanyl at an Oregon high school, authorities said.

The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Wednesday that one of their deputies traveled to Willamine High School, southwest of Portland, on Tuesday to investigate the case and was asked by an employee to help check the bathroom for a suspicious smell.

The deputy approached the modular classroom toilet, noticed a strong pungent odor and demanded that staff and students evacuate the classroom, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputy began to show symptoms suggestive of a possible overdose, and some students also reported feeling unwell, the sheriff’s office said.

Grand Ronde Confederate Tribes Emergency Services responded, treated one student and checked on two others. One student was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital. The deputy was also treated in the hospital after the warden saw that the deputy needed medical attention.

The deputy reported chest tightness with limited ability to breathe, along with other symptoms, as well as confusion and an inability to speak coherently, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said the student may have burned what is now believed to be fake M30 pills containing fentanyl.

The Willamine School District notified parents and the affected classroom was ventilated and thoroughly cleaned, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, there have been several documented fentanyl overdoses in the county in the last four days, one of which was fatal. Because of this, authorities are concerned about the potential regional distribution of a particularly potent batch of counterfeit pills.
