12 injured, 1 critically in Louisiana nightclub shooting

Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ten people were injured in a shooting at a Baton Rouge nightclub, Louisiana officials said Sunday.

According to police, one of the victims is in critical condition. No arrests have been made, but police believe the early morning attack was “targeted”.

“This was not an accidental act of violence based on the preliminary investigation,” Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. “We believe that this was a targeted event in which someone was specifically injured and others were injured.”

Three Baton Rouge police officers were nearby when the shots were fired around 1:30 a.m. and responded to the Dior Bar & Lounge. They provided life-saving assistance until paramedics arrived.

“We believe their prompt response prevented further injury,” Paul said.

Although the police have some leads, Paul urged anyone with information about the shooting to report it.

“There is someone who knows something – do the right thing. You can save the next incident, because it is obvious that this person has a complete disregard for life, ”said Paul.

The police did not say how many of the people who were shot were targeted. Paul declined to comment on how many shooters opened fire.

“I understand the interest and that everyone wants information, but remember… we have to get it right,” Paul said of the ongoing investigation. “And sometimes getting it right means I can’t give information right now.”

Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broom, who last week met with mayors of other major U.S. cities in Washington, D.C. to discuss crime, called the shooting “a senseless act of violence that will not go unpunished.”

“We will not stop our work until everyone feels safe and until people stop turning to weapons to resolve their differences,” Broome tweeted.

Although the number of murders in Baton Rouge decreased last year compared to 2021, the Louisiana capital is suffering from gun violence. In October, nine people were injured in an early morning shooting near the Baton Rouge campus of Southern University.
