Feb. 9 (UPI) — In Baltimore, a pedestrian was killed and five people were injured after a fleeing stolen car collided with another vehicle and crashed into a building, which then collapsed.

The incident in the Eastern District took place around 8:54 p.m. on Wednesday evening, when officers identified the stolen car in the city’s E. North Avenue corridor, Baltimore police spokesman Lindsey Eldredge said.

When they approached to investigate, the vehicle fled the scene at “high speed,” police said.

“The stolen vehicle collided with another vehicle and both vehicles collided with a building at the intersection of E. North Avenue and Wolfe Street, causing the building to collapse,” Eldridge said.

One of the cars hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk and then crashed into a building and Deputy Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department Rich Worley. stated at a press conference at the scene that the pedestrian died from his injuries.

However, it is not clear how the victim, a 54-year-old man who has yet to be named, died, as he was also hit by the rubble of the building as it collapsed.

The five wounded were removed from the two vehicles by firefighters and paramedics and taken to district hospitals. Their condition is currently unknown.

It is reported that the building, located at the intersection of E. North Avenue and Wolf Street, is empty.

Police and firefighters who arrived at the scene pulled cars out of the collapsed building and continue to clear debris at the intersection, which is located on the border of Broadway East and South Clifton Park.

Worley denied reports that it was a car chase, saying it was not clear how the police tried to stop the car.

“This is still under investigation, we will look at all the cameras on the body, any other video to see what really happened that caused the car to take off and cause this accident,” Worley said.

Due to the seriousness of the incident, the police department referred the case to the Independent Investigation Division of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
